CHARLENE

What she’s doing now(February 2004):

Charlene completed her studies in Computer Systems Technology and took a position at a nationally based security firm after completing Taking It Off’s first season. The technique she employed while tackling her weight-loss challenge -- fiddling with a problem from all angles - has already paid off at work, where she was promoted to a position in sales and marketing after a few months. However, maintaining a consistent exercise routine without the pressure of being watched by TV viewers has proven more difficult, especially since Charlene finds gym memberships too pricey. But inspired by her brother who lost 25 pounds by following a popular video-based exercise program, she’s embarking on a similar at-home routine.

The principles Charlene learned about fitness during Taking It Off’s six-month immersion have stuck, however, and are making it easier for her to try again. She knows that pre-planning what she’s going to eat is key to succeeding, as is finding opportunities for fitness that are so much fun they don’t feel like work. High on her list is hiking in the mountains and indoor rock climbing.

Charlene’s favourite food strategies:
Order spinach salad at restaurants. "It makes me full and everything they incorporate into it, mushrooms, eggs, even bacon bits, is good for you."

Eat starchy foods like rice from a bowl instead of a large plate. "Portion-wise, it’s amazing. If you use a bowl it makes it feel like you have so much more than you do."

Charlene’s favourite exercise strategies:
Try activities that are fun. Indoor rock climbing is one which Charlene not only found a novel workout for legs and arms, but a sport that’s inexpensive if you take advantage of all-day rates. "It’s like spending the day at the water-park."
