Background Cory’s recently experienced a lot of discomfort due to his weight, like having trouble fitting into chairs and tying his shoes. He’s also gone up a waist size in his uniform, a reminder that he might be slipping on the fitness requirements of his job. Cory’s never been skinny, but about two years ago his weight really shot up due to the stress of school. The slow climb continued with the difficulties of shift work. To compound the problem, he became self-conscious about going to the gym. Why Taking it Off Cory wants to lose 30-40 pounds - and he really wants to cut his hair! In an agreement made with Cathy, (Cory’s serious girlfriend and partner in every aspect of the weight loss venture), Cory isn’t allowed to trim his scruffy mane till he loses 30 pounds. As well, Cory wants to be great at his job, which often has physical challenges. Even more serious, Cory’s been getting intimations of mortality with his father’s diabetes diagnosis. It turns out there’s a family history of diabetes and high blood pressure – Cory wants to beat the trend. Challenges A disorienting schedule of shift work presents major hurdles - Cory really wants to learn what to eat and when. Both Cory and Cathy really love to entertain, cooking huge calorie-laden meals. All of this is complicated by the fact that Cory’s girlfriend Cathy is a skinny, athletic personal trainer who seems to able to eat all manner of junk food with absolutely no ill effects! Quotes from Cory: “In six months I would like to have shorter hair, be healthier, happier, more active and have changed my life. I would be more comfortable if I was 30 to 40 pounds lighter.” |
