I don't know were to start? I am trying myself to lose 80-100lbs. Out of all the particapents, Past and present I can relate to being your size and in your situation the most.
For me it's dealing with the emotions as best I can first. I feel I am a prisoner to them. The day I am haveing, whether I feel good or I feel bad, most times dictates how much I eat. I relize it most times when I am sitting in my chair, stuffed to the gills and still craving for more. It's love and affection I was needing, not the food.
I feel that most people batteling with their weight have similar traits to those batteling booze , pills, you name it. They are often overly sensitive, moderatly Inteligent, empathetic, overly aware of the world, and other peoples suffering. Wearing their hearts on their sleeves they fall victom to the predators in the world. beaten and battered they retreat to what gives them their instant feel good fix! For me that just happens to be food. for some booze, pills, pick your poison! They will all kill you, some just faster then others.
Well I was glad to see you lead the way for your group being a hard working success story is how the world see's you! Don't let this go by. Seize the day my friend! Make your new destiney!

I watched Season 3 the first time around, and was just wondering what you were down to now. You did so awesome, I don't think you could be too far from your goal by now.

Response post by Daryl of Taking It Off:

Daryl Says:

Hi Anna, Things are going very good for me! My training is going great! I am doing a different kind of training then I did on the show. I am lifting weights 5 days a week and still pumping up the cardio! I can tell you that I have put on an awful bunch on muscle which is awesome! So my body is doing a huge composition flip and its kinda crazy right now! I don't have a number to give you right now as I haven't weighed in for some time. i got way to obsessed with the number. So yeah, measurements are coming down thats important!! BIG SEXY is like a top secret project,a work in progress,I can't wait until the final unveiling!!!hehehe Thanks for writing in and take care! Hi Daryl,
I have been watching the show and think that out of any of the people on the show you have been the most honest and dedicated.
I am so sorry for the loss of your mother. The love you have for her came shinning through and you made me cry more than once for your pain as well as my being thankful that I still have my mother here with me to treasure. She very obviously was a special lady to have raised such a fine young man as you!
Keep the faith, keep up the "fight" and may all that is good and healthy in life come your way! Be true to you always!!!

You're doing great, I know the challenge sometimes seems hard, but here's a little poem that helped me reach my goals.

Set a goal and keep on track,
Don't let life's misfortunes make you doubt your courage;
Press on; difference and hard work never go unrewarded and dreams really do come true.

Take care and I wish you the best.

Hey Daryl I've seen you on the show a few times and can completely relate to you. 4 years ago, I weighed in over 420lbs and now I am 275, and won Golden Gloves a couple of months ago. I went from a 62" waist to a 44" waist. I still have to lose another 25lbs to meet my goal of being 250lbs, and it is a constant struggle. You seem to have resolve (saying no to chicken wings!) so keep pushing hard...pretty soon you will have to run around in the shower to get wet! hahaha...good luck, sincerely.

GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU CHAMP!!! Always like to hear from the BIG DAWGS around Canada! That is great, and congrats on your transformation!!! training is going really good! Natalie of Edmonton writes:

Hello Daryl,

I watched today's episode and your behaviour was negative and very disapointing. Losing weight is not just about the scale, you know that and hopefully you've finally learned to accept that. You say you want to play for the Eskimos, but if you don't change your attitude you'll never be on their team. What will you do when your team looses, hopefully you wouldn't walk around whining and pouting as you've done one too many times on the show. You presented yourself on the show as a christian, may I suggest that you do a personal study of the fruit of the spirit. Lighten up!!!!

Response post by Daryl of Taking It Off:

Daryl Says:

Hi Natalie, Thanks for taking time to write in! However, you don't even know me and who I am as a person. You watch me for a couple minutes on tv, during a emotional response to comments made to me that were not aired...... You have no idea what I am all about if thats all you see. I will admit I did get obsessed about the scale number while on the show and I have accepted that its not all about a number. As for my aspirations for football, if you knew anything about me you would know that I am a team player. Football is not an individual sport, but I thought you knew that. My attitude is fine for football, but then again I could be wrong, after all the 5 minutes you seen my on tv must be the be all and end all!!! You can call me a whiner and pouting all you want if it makes you feel better...The point is I get results,I get results for me! I have overcome alot of personal and emotional obstacles and nothing will stop me! As for the "fruits of the spirit" I find them fascinating, So lets do a quick check list on the fruits.... lets see.....love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control..... If you knew me natalie, really knew me you would know that I posess them all and I am proud to say it! We are all human's with human responses emotionally, mentally and physically! We all have our moments and you got to see them on tv edited for your viewing pleasure, there is more to Daryl than you see on the TV. As for your advice to "lighten Up!!!" I have been doing that since June of 2003 and my whole plan is to "lighten up", the fat comes off the muscle comes on, the best choice I ever made was to "lighten up" and do it on national tv!!!! THANK YOU TAKING IT OFF, for helping me "LIGHTEN UP!!!!" Thanks again for writing in, take care and God Bless! Peace, Love & Shirts Off Daryl aka Big Sexy

Daryl,

I have watched this show on and off for the past couple of seasons. That is until i saw you. I loved to see you, you always had such a great attitude and outlook. I have always hated my weight and heard nothing but "Laurel you don't have to worry, you look great." Its great when people tell you that but you always know yourself that you feel different inside. I'd love to hear from you and hear more about you and your story, we have much in common. I feel kind of weird writing this on a website for all to see but what can you do? Hope to hear from you soon.

Its okay to hate your weight but its not okay to hate yourself, this is one other thing I have learned! Hey Daryl

I just wanted to write to you and tell you how inspiring it is to see you go for your goals and dreams and not let size stop you. You're the main reason I watch the show and I get upset if you're not in it as often. I even talk about with a few of my co-workers who I've gotten addicted to watching you.

I used to be a big guy as well (I got the left over stretch marks to prove it) and now most people don't recognize me from then (lost over 100lbs). I really believe it's not the size that matters but how you feel. And if you're boyish grinning face is any indication, you look like your feeling great.

Keep up the great work!

Rooting for ya in T.O.

Hey, I know the show is done now, but I just happened to catch the finale this week. You did some serious work there man! Personally, I don't see why people feel the pressure to lose a lot of weight. Hi there Daryl,
Like yourself, I am a big guy and a former football player with pro-aspirations. Like yourself, I found myself behind the 8-ball (physically) after football as my physical activities (playing, training, etc...) ended but my joy of feeding the machine continued. Couple that with a high paced ⁄ stressed daily life working 3 jobs...more danger. It was so bad, that after going cold turkey for my favorite delivery meal (KFC large wings, large fries and gravy), I got a call from KFC asking why the love has gone and 50% off my next order. That blew my mind! That day it all changed (still cold turkey).
I just wanted to tell you to keep fighting. It is not easy (like I have to tell you) and it won't be easy. Non athletes rarely get to experience true struggle and reward in the same context as athletes. And we all have our 4th and long moments...but this is a goal line stand and we have to drive it in. This is the big boy work, not the fast little guys. Just keep fighting. Run till you puke. Because, like I've found out, the other option is everything that we don't want.
Your doing a hell of a job and I hope you enjoy sticking it to those who said ⁄ think that you could do it (nothing is more rewarding in this life than success in the face of insurmountable defeat.
Rock on....

Hey Adrian! Its good to hear from another BIG DAWG!!!!! Cold turkey is the way to do it BRO!! I did the same thing! Its tough but it worked!!! Thanks for taking time to write in! I like to hear peoples stories and struggles, it lets me know that I am not the only one out there bustin my ass!!!! That is one of the toughest things I battle, thinking back to where I once was, 285lbs, strong as HELL and everything going for me... I never, EVER thought it would come crashing down like it did!! I now consider myself back at the level of an athlete not a SLUG!!! My workouts are as intense as ever and lifting is going sooooo good. I lost alot of strength with that 66 lb loss during the show! It took a long time for my strength to come back and I am still working on it! I haven't weighed in for awhile because of my lifting!! I know my weight might go up and I just don't want to obsess over a number on the scale, so I am just doing my thing and I can tell everyone that my measurements are coming down! I am putting muscle on, like crazy!!!! Muscle is heavier than fat.... So I think I will weigh in June and see whats happening with the number!! Thanks for the encouragement!!!! Your right, ITS BIG BOY WORK, TIME TO DRIVE!!!!!! TIME TO DOMINATE!!!! As for football there is a very good chance you might see me playing for the U of Alberta in Fall of 2004!!! Unless any coaches out there read this forum, I NEED A TEAM TO PLAY FOR!!!!!hehehe Thanks for the quote!!! I hope that your on the road to recovery yourself BRO!!!! And one other thing, you spoke about wanting a "thin" girl during the series...maybe you should give "bigger" girls a chance ... we are all human and size really is irrelevant to WHO you are and you could be missing a wonderful girl because of her "size"....I bet you'd love for girls not to "judge" you based on size...and if you want that to be the case, you will have to let go of wanting a "thin" girl yourself!!! You can't ask for what you can't give.

Roxanne.

Response post by Daryl of Taking It Off:

Daryl Says:

Hi Roxanne, Thanks for writing in! Thank you also for the compliment, to tell you the truth I am not sure what my weight is at the moment! I have been seriously lifting for a few months now and I know that my numbers might have gone up, i do know that my measurements are still going down. I am a size 44 in a jean and am able to shop at normal stores for some things like American Eagle and Old Navy to name a couple. So yeah, i am just trying not to be obsessed with a number on the scale which is hard. People think if your weight goes up you blew your diet or are not working hard, but with the lifting I am putting on some size, muscle wise that is!! Things are going awesome, just workin my butt off!! For the second part of this email, I guess I should explain myself!! I did apologize in an earlier email for the comments I made on that episode! I didn't want to offend anyone, I am just very honest!! What I am looking for isn't a "thin" girl!! I believe I said "HOT" girl on the episode! Now "HOT" can mean many different things!! For instance, what I am looking for is a healthy girl, someone active and that likes a physical healthy lifestyle. I am not looking for a super-thin model gurl! I am talkin a 5'6er to a 6 footer!!hehehe The "HOT" gurl I am waiting for has some meat on her!!hehehe A gurl that is self-confident and secure with her body, one thing I am working towards and will get there!! I know gurls that are extremely attractive and have bodies other girls would kill for that are not comfortable in their own skin. They are "HOT" in society's standard but have no self-confidence, which is not healthy! I want a healthy "HOT" girl, that is someone who I think is "HOT" not society!! I am working my butt off to be more attractive to the "HOT" gurls of the world. Chemistry and physical attraction are huge in my world. This is probably going to get me in deeper trouble but its the truth. I am not looking for a trophy, just someone who knocks me off my feet!!! I don't want to settle, i know what I want, and hopefully one day will meet her!!! Hopefully SOON!!!!hehehe I just want to TOTAL PACKAGE, of physical attraction, mental attraction, emotional attraction... I believe that one day I will meet her!!! WHERE ARE YOU???????hehehe So yeah, I hope that explains my view a little bit more!! Some people think I am a jerk for wanting what I want... I am just honest and didn't mean to offend anyone! DON'T HATE THE PLAYER, HATE THE GAME!!!!hehehe So yeah, i could probably go on but sooner or later I will end up sticking my foot in my mouth again!!hehehe Thanks for writing in Roxanne! Take care! Hi Daryl.

I'm not a completely loyal viewer of the show in the sense that I don't get to catch it all the time, but if there's an episode on that I've already seen, I'll always watch it!

I had and still have my own problem with weight. But I used to be quite a bit bigger than I am now. It's all thanks to Martial Arts! I started 4 years ago, and I look and feel better, and I can kick a lil' butt if I have to.

I just wanted to tell you that you're my favourite participant because you make me laugh. The whole Big Sexy thing and you talking to the scale! I feel like such a nerd when I'm sitting there, smiling and laughing in front of the tv! Plus, you seem like a really open, honest, and sweet guy (just to name a few). :)

Best of luck in the future, and never give up (down with the wings, lol)! Ow! Sexy! ;)

Hi, everyone!

I just wanted to say congratulations to all of the participants! You all did well, and I am sure many people are motivated by the successes they saw on the show. I know watching your struggles has helped to keep me motivated! Sure, some of the successes were larger than others, but you all had accomplishments during the show. For instance, every one of you improved your times for the stair climb and the mile run after the 6 months, which is great!

I feel like I have been on your journey with you, in many ways. I still have a long way to go (another 100 pounds, I figure), but I know I'll get there, even if it takes me 2 more years. I'm already 28 pounds down, so I am looking at what I have accomplished so far, rather than focussing on how far I still have to go. With any luck at all, I am now no longer a candidate for a heart attack by the time I'm 40 - just 3 years down the road!

Thank you all for your inspiration, and for letting us invade your lives for 6 months. I doubt it could have been easy!

Take care!

Hey Daryl,
I just wanted to drop you a line and congratulate you on your success! From the minute i started watching the show there was something about you, the big guy with a heart of gold, that made me keep tuning in. ( In fact, i made all my friends watch, we were all convinced there were no good looking nice guys left!) and I'm proud to say you were my example that they do exist! (blush*smile). So now we have someone to talk about on our mile walks every night ( oh yeah you inspired us there too!) and we're all convinced that if you're single ( are you?! lol) that there will definitely be some HOTTIES knocking down your door! (if not, i'll introduce you to my friends lol). So here's my question for you: what number will your jersey be so i can point you out to my friends once again?
I'm going to end this with a couple of my favorite quotes "there's no short cut to any place worth going" and "nothing will ever taste as good as thin feels"
P.S. please thank your mom and dad for raising a one of a kind guy!
Take care!

Hi Daryl - I stumbled upon this show one day (and was super-amazed it was Canadian to boot!) and was very encouraged to see it. But, I was also encouraged by you because of your faith and openness about God. I want to remind you that through God, anything is possible. Whether it be weight-loss, battling depression or any other stumbling block we come upon. Jan of Edmonton writes:

Daryl: Please don't judge yourself by the number on the scale! Anyone who has ever worked on weight loss can tell you that you may not see the benefit of your hard work for several weeks after your efforts. Scales also monitor water weight, which can fluctuate considerably day to day. You are doing all the right things day to day. The weight loss has to follow. Just one suggestion--give serious consideration to getting a sports nutritionist's consultation. Weight loss can stall if you are not taking in enough calories to fuel muscle growth and activity level. Once you know how much to eat, you may only need to see he⁄she every few months to tailor your diet for your current weight and activity level. Then when you hit your maintenance phase, you are equipped completely to do it on your own. You are so good at getting advice from skilled, knowledgeable people, it just seems a shame to avoid advice from a dietician because you want to "do it on your own".

Jan (PS: I'm keeping MY shirt on, because both of us would be just too disturbed if I didn't.)

Response post by Daryl of Taking It Off:

Daryl Says:

Hi Jan, COME ON JAN!!!! SHIRTS OFF!!!!!!hehehe Too funny! Anyways, thanks for writing in Jan, The number game consumed me and still does actually. I really want to be where i was once at and its a battle everyday not to get discouraged about the past! One thing I have learned and am actually doing is restraint on weigh in's. I am lifting alot now trying to get my strength back and I know with lifting putting on muscle will mess with the numbers. So the scale has this power over people to be the end all of everything. I am doing my best not to be that way! So I am just working hard and although I want to weigh myself I resist the urge and let it go! As for the sport nutritionist I am definately looking in to it, thats great advice. I guess I just wasn't ready for a nutritionist in the beginning but now with a way higher fitness level I am almost, well NO, I am back to athlete status and I need to fuel myself properly!!! So yeah, I will take your advice Jan, no worries!! I will reach 288, thats a BIG SEXY GUARANTEE!!!! Thanks again Jan, Shirts off just isn't just a physical action, its a whole lifestyle change on not being self concious!!!!hehehe SO to all the people...........PEACE, LOVE & SHIRTS OFF!!!!!! Ruth of Ontario writes:

I was very concerned with your comments at the end of the show....I know it's frustrating working so hard and not losing a single pound but DON'T YOU DARE SABOTAGE YOURSELF!!!!!! You do know that muscle weighs more than fat, right. Like Giz said, low weights and lots of reps. When you pump more iron and build muscle, the scale can actually go the wrong way! Believe me. I can see the increase in your biceps on this week's show. I love lifting weights but, for a female, I really build muscle easily and quickly, even with light weights, especially on my arms. Just after university when I started lifting, I was actually going to the gym 6 days a week .....I literally began to look like Popeye because my job at the time was physically demanding on my arms. Even last year when I started lifting weights again, I bulked up really quickly and again, my weight wouldn't go down. I have a very supportive dietitian (I go every 4-6 weeks as I'm diabetic) who is very knowledgable about weight training, etc., and she had me bring in my measurements.....she could figure out from the changes in my measurements that even though I had only lost 2 pounds on the scale, I had lost at least 10 pounds of fat! She also believes that scales can be a person's worst enemy when trying to lose weight. She won't let me get weighed every visit, even when I beg! And by the way, regarding your comment about "not asking a nutritionist because I want to say I did it on my own" (or something to that effect)....asking for help from a dietitian or nutritionist isn't copping out or giving in....I am only 36 and in danger of losing my kidneys from the diabetes and my dietitian is a great resource for information and encouragement. I really appreciate the support my dietitian gives me. Sorry for preaching, but I was kind of upset after some of the comments on this week's show. Keep fighting...you are going to win! :-)

Hi Ruth, I absolutely love hearing stories of other people's experience! It was a tough weigh in for me, I was hoping for a nice drop to come closer to my goal, it was tough to take!!! It is hard because of the amount of fat I am carrying it should have dropped, but it didn't... I to realize that I did put on a fair amount of muscle, and you hear different stories from different people. i was told by Paul(the weigh in trainer) that there was no chance that I would be able to put on that kind of muscle, and that I must have not been working hard enough... That is hard to take, when people cannot see my everyday work out for that 3 week stretch. Peoples words can definately play with your head. Everybody is intitled to their own opinion but negative support can mess you up. Enough about that, I do realize that my body is doing a composition flip and I cannot exspect to have huge loss numbers anymore, and I am cool with that, as long as the chub still is melting off!;-) As for the whole nutritionist thing, I just wanted to show people that they can achieve results by themselves. Some people cannot afford a nutritionist but that should not stop them from giving it their best. If I could go back I would get one, I think they are a huge benefit and their knowledge is awesome! Thanks ruth for "preaching"its nothing to be sorry for, I love emails like the one you wrote! I have a father that is a diabetic and I want you to know that I will be throwing up a few prayers for you! Us fighters gotta stick together!!!! Sabotage is not an option!! Thanks for your support, I really appreciated your email! Thanks again! Peace, Love & Shirts Off Daryl aka Big Sexy

Rebecca of Victoria writes:

HI Daryl, You are doing great, I wish I had an ounce of your will power. I was a little offended by your comments tonight regarding "fat chicks". Do you not find it contradictory that in the same breath you say you don't like "ugly, fat chicks" and then complain that you are afraid to approach hotties and that they don't like you because you are big. How is that different from what you said about fat girls? You say you want an attractive girlfriend, but what makes someone attractive?..isn't it what is on the inside? Because you will be far happier with a nice girl you have a connection with, regardless of how she looks.
You should appreciate yourself and women for what they are not how they look.
Congrats on the weight loss!

Response post by Daryl of Taking It Off:

Daryl Says:

Dear Rebecca, First off, I want to apologize for offending you and any other people who might have got offended by my words in the last episode. There is more to what I said... I want to clarify, yes I do want a HOT girl! The definition of HOT from me is: Someone who i am attracted to not only physically but mentally as well. Hot to my tastes, not society's! Substance and connection is so important! You cannot judge a book by its cover. I don't want people to judge my taste in girls by this one show! It was a few seconds of "arranged words". I admit I am cocky, but humor is a part of life for me. I was being real and honest but there was more to the story. Yes, I have battled with self confidence issues for a long time. I also said on the show,"is it fair for me to want⁄think that way, when I myself are not what a society would consider "Hot"???? Through the whole show you get to see a little glimpse of all the participants lives!!!! There is way more to us than is shown on TV! At the same time, thanks for the kind compliments! I have learned to appreciate myself and women for what they are and not how they look... Thanks for your honesty in your email! Take care! Peace, Love & Shirts Off Daryl aka Big Sexy

Daryl: (I am not going to call you Tank anymore) I would like to smack you up side the head for being so hard on yourself on today's show. It is tremendously hard to lose weight and you are on your way. You are healthier than when you first started, lighter than when you first started, and JUST AS FUNNY AND SEXY!!!!! (I had to put that in there you know). You have done a great thing for yourself and just don't be so hard on yourself. I think you look great and just pray hard that what you strive for will happen. I must say it suprised me to see you sitting in church, I think it is great and you must also have the support of your brothers and sissters at your church as much as I am sure you have the support of your brothers and sisters at AUPE. Just remember....you are a wonderful person. (and some day you will find a HOTTIE to be you love).

Daryl, you are WAY too hard on yourself...you are doing great because you really "get" it!! I know it's discouraging to see the numbers stall but when you turned down those yummy looking chicken wings, that was a much bigger accomplishment than seeing a drop on the friggin' scale!! I know, I know, it sucks...I have been there...I took off over 100 lbs a few years ago and those plateaus I hit along the way sent me racing for the fridge BUT that doesn't get you closer to your goals hon...keep strong, keep focused...you are amazing!!

Laura

Response post by Daryl of Taking It Off:

Daryl Says:

Hi Laura, I have always been hard on myself! Always! I am changing slowly but I am still very intense! Up to that weigh in was the hardest 3 weeks I put in during the show!!!! I was crushed when that scale didn't move!!!! You learn alot about yourself when you watch it on TV! I have to give PROPS to all the people that can relate, PLATEAU'S SUCK!!!!! I have a hard time accepting defeat, that weigh in was a little defeat, a set back! I appreciate your email Laura, and congrats for getting the weight off!!!! Patty of Courtenay writes:

Daryl I have played that game with the scales many a time. Cindy is right when she talks of the dangers of letting the scale rule your life. Your accomplishments are many and cannot be measured by the scale alone. I know you have a number in your head which is driving you. If you have achieved that number you have succeeded and if not you have failed. Remember when you had to use the "special" scale? Remember when your eating was out of control? Remember when activity was a memory? All of that has changed since you started this show and THAT is your success. You will get where you want to be eventually if you stick with eating healthy and exercising. Don't get boxed in by timelines or numbers on the scale. You ROCK, Daryl.

Response post by Daryl of Taking It Off:

Daryl Says:

Dear Patty, You are right! The scale is a very dangerous weapon! I want that number bad, I need that number bad!!! I am a huge goal setter and when I don't achieve what I set out to do I am very hard on myself as you all can see! I want so bad to be where I use to be and it overtakes my better judgement alot of the time. I know I am going to get back and better that by taking my body to a place it has never been before! This whole journey has been 99% mental, FOR REAL!!!!! It is my opinion that weight loss period is 99% mental! Focus is key, but you can lose control! I have learned so much watching myself, I know what I have to work on and this whole experience has opened my eyes! I will still be hard on myself, it feeds me to take it to another level! I am stubborn, thats for sure!!!!!;-) Thanks for putting me in CHECK! I appreciate your email and thanks for the encouragement!!! I am still on my journey and this is a life experience I will never forget!!!! I ain't finished yet!;-) Thanks again! Peace, Love & Shirts Off Daryl aka BIG SEXY

Hello Daryl, I'm happy to see how well you are doing with your weight loss plan. I'm sure that you will achieve your goals and even more in a hurry. I have been struggling with my weight since I was first told that I was overweight by my pediatrician when I was just 7. Living in a close family, and being the only overweight person has been extremely hard, and I have to say that the comments and looks I've gotten since I started high school have been internalized and I have become synonymous of a self fulfilling prophecy. I am told that I will never achieve my goals, and thus I sabotage myself everytime I try to lose weight. Recently I discovered Atkins and my summer wasfilled with hope... yet I have to get back onto my diet. Starting university brought with it new challenges and the "easy" meals and sugar filled snacks. I just wanted you to know that you have motivated me to keep trying and not give up.
Keep it up : )

Do not ever believe that you will not achieve your goals, you must push through and just do it no matter what the HATERS say!!!! I am glad that I am able to motivate you to keep trying! Keep up the good work Daryl, this is your Boss and I'm keeping an eye on you. Remember you have to beat me to any emergencies and that's not hard to do. I hope the rest of the people cheering you on get to know how you really have done up to this point because you are making the rest of us at work look very bad.

I've had so much fun watching your success. I got so excited when you moved off the "special scale", I had to pull up the website and share your story with my sister!
I started working with a trainer about a year ago, and have found it to be the most empowering experience. Have fun! I'll be watching & cheering...
