Welcome to the Taking it Off discussion forum. 4/3/2007 Gwen of st catharines writes how could they not bring on a new TAKING IT OFF.
This show is wonderful. I wish you all beautiful success! I truly wish we knew how you were doing now! 3/21/2007 miriam of victoria writes Hi everyone! So I went to the casting call in Victoria and it seems that I was not picked :(
Oh well, I'm on my own I guess. So if there is anyone else who was hoping to get on, and didn't, I am open to getting our own group started, here in Victoria. We can work on it together. If you're interested in this, please email miriam@embraceyourspace.ca
Hope to hear from a bunch of you!!! 3/13/2007 Tracy of The west kootenays, British columbia! writes Hi to all of you, the participants of season 4! You ALL have been and continue to be a HUGE help to me with my lifestyle changes and weight loss goals. I may not need to lose a lot but I have a heck of a time losing the last 10-15 pounds that I can not get rid of It, it seems no matter what. So when I saw your groups on the show, it was what I seem to have needed to keep going! You are all so happy and sucessful and I feel like you are all helping me as I go, and I am praying that one, or all, of you can help me figure out WHY on earth I am struggling SO much here with this, the last 10-15, and not being able to achieve my goal or should I say, my healthy weight, and where I would feel good and be happy and like how I look. According to my family doc, I am healthy and do not neeed to lose mcuh if any, medically speaking, but I should weigh in the range of 125-155 for my 5'5 height. According to her charts and I can not get down from 155 to where I want and need to be, at 140-145, where I have always been except after baby #3!! You all did such a dramatic weight loss, and did it wisely, and you did it down to the goal pound pretty well! You are all such a blessing to me and even though I am struggling with these last pounds, I am really praying that maybe one of you could give me some pointers or share a way to deal with this struggle. I am not seeming to be able to overcome, even though I know I am getting a ton of excercise as I work with horses daily and ride MY own horse each day and powerwalk for an hour each night and have a hubby and kids to take care of too! No matter how well I eat and stick to my plan, or how much spouse, family and friend support I have! And again I know it is possible, you all show me that and you ALL did GREAT!!! I truly believe that you all, or maybe one of you! Will be the one with the plan they followed that wil be the right plan for me or for my body and be The right paln for me to follow! Or maybe you can share that "one" certan thing that will be the key to me achieveing my goal! Oh Lord, I pray it is! I have been trying so long, our last child is 7! Now I found you all on the health channel a few months back and taped it! I am so proud of all of you and I know you have all been an inspiration to folks nation wide! Great job and thank you all for letting us, the public/viewer, in to your lives to share with your weight loss and as well as with the weight loss in regards to all aspects of your lives, family, career and all! You are a terrific bunch of people! Thanks again to Big Reg, Wendy, Alyson, Bruce, and Byron, as well as David, Jaclyn, Zoe, Trina, and Lindsay! And God bless you all! Your B.C. friend, Tracy 3/5/2007 The Producers of Taking It Off and X-Weighted of Edmonton writes You're free online diet and weight loss journal can be found at www.fitday.com 2/26/2007 Wildcat Wendy of Halifax, Nova Scotia writes Hey Jo of Mississauga. I just wanted to thank you for your kind words. I am glad that you have been inspired. I also wanted to say that you are on the right track already! YOU CAN DO THIS! Don't ever give up because you are so worth the hard work it will take. each day it gets a bit easier, and remember you are NEVER alone...we are now cheering you on, so keep us posted. We are in your corner all the way. YOU GO GIRL! I want you to tell us in 6 months what you did and how successful you are. I will wait to hear from you. Ask the producers to give you my e-mail address and I will personally keep in touch with you. GO GO GO!! 2/20/2007 Heidi of Toronto writes Hi, I am writing to those who have participated in the X Weighted series. Can you tell me (all of us) about what it was like for you and your family to have the cameras around? I have already filled out my application and hope to get to the auditions in Toronto, but I have a few looming questions that my family has been asking me, and I'd appreciate if you could share your experiences in these matters!
First off, how often were they around? Did you get notice each time and if so how short a notice did you get?
Were you able to fit in all the filming/interviewing/appts. with Paul etc. along with your job in a way that didn't make you burn out?
Do you have any say regarding what gets edited out - I'm thinking, for example, what if a child was really misbehaving while the crew were there filming one day- and you preferred that unflattering moment in your child's life not air - would they be respectful about that? I would just hate to be stressed out about that each time the cameras come in my home and my life. I guess I look at it like they'd have the right and you'd even expect them to air your most difficult days or experiences as part of the storyline, but I'd want to protect what goes out into the world with respect to my kids.
As well, did they help you afford the weight loss treatment you used? I noted that some are ones I've always wanted to try but I am pretty sure the price range is out of my league. I don't want to check something off or say I'd love to try it, and be boxed in to that choice (and the price tag) if there isn't any financial help. I'd select different weight loss strategies if all the money came from my pocket, that's all, but I'd like to know BEFORE I say anything at the interview!
Thanks in advance for your information! 2/15/2007 Kate of Ottawa writes I discovered this show this month and found myself watching an entire season in one afternoon of re-runs. I was so dissapointed to learn that there were no casting calls in Ottawa! Our picturesque city that is keen on promoting it's "green" status would be an ideal place to film a season - and I'd be the first in line to apply! 1/29/2007 Jennifer Lindover of Toronto writes I love this show !!! No matter what your size... fightening fat is always hard; food is always the enemy.
I wish I could find a group of friends who I could get together with & form a support group. We could share our goals, work out/eating plans & just help each other out on this journey. Unlike a lot of people, I have struggled with my weight my whole life. I think I was even over weight in the womb! Anyways, due to illnesses (kidney disease; 8 herniated discs; arthritis in both knees) how I exercise (cannot run or play most sports)& what I can eat (little protein & salt) is greatly afftected. As a result, weight loss & changing my body is soooo slow & difficult. But I exercise 3-5 times a week & have taught myself how to cook & bake healthy. I just wish I could have a support group to lean on. Thanx for listening. 1/11/2007 jo of mississauga writes I'm so happy to have found this site. You people from season 4 have hit a spot in me. Dave, Wendy, and Reg; every week I couldn't wait to see how you had done from the week before. I cried out of sheer joy at your final weigh. So now it's my turn again to try to lose my extra weight, 90 lb's. I'll be doing this with no support except the support I will get from you 3 being able to meet your goals and beliving that I can too. So here I go , wish me luck! 1/10/2007 The Producers of X-Weighted and Taking It Off of Edmonton writes Hello, thank you for your insights into the show. At this time we do not have plans to create an in-home follow along program. Of course our hope is that you develop your own lifestyle and weight-loss goals from the examples set by the show’s participants. Currently we’re busy filming season II of X-Weighted. If you’re interested in applying to X-Weighted, future casting calls may take place spring 2007. Specific casting dates and locations are not confirmed at this time, so please keep watching the websites for details. Good luck!
1/3/2007 Producers of Taking It Off and X-Weighted of Edmonton writes Nothing is in the works as far as reunion for Taking It Off. Please look out for X-Weighted and X-Weighted II, (coming out in summer 2007), on Life Network for our most recent weight loss shows. 1/2/2007 B. Casado of Red Deer, AB writes Hello! I have been watching 'The Biggest Loser' on TV and really enjoyed it BUT, I would like to have a Canadian alternative. Your show sounds like it is it. I have read the internet info, and I am impressed that it is totally about personal success and not at all about the 'game' and getting voted off the show. What I do like about the show is the online 'you can do it too at home support set-up'. I am looking to lose about 40 lbs. I don't live in Calgary but would like to challenge myself along with contestants. Are you going to develop the at home wanna-be aspect for the show? 1/2/2007 Pat of Halifax, NS writes Addicted to Taking It Off and wondering if their is any hope of a reunion show. 11/15/2006 Cristy of British Columbia writes I watched your show for the first time and loved it, it was with Bruce. I really enjoyed that episode. I would like to see work outs done with out the gym and equipment as every one cannot afford going to the gym or buying their own equipment. Iwould also like to see work outs done were you dont have to give 2 hrs at a time like some do I would like to see a high impact 1 hr work out that a larger person can do with out it being too diffcult, to many fancy foot steps, ect, ect. 11/8/2006 Barb Springstead of London Ontario Area writes I need help to get over the mountain!!! I am 5'5" 150 lbs (was 218lbs 5 years ago) and holding holding holding. This is the problem, I can't seem to budge away from the 150's. I just completed the first 2 weeks on the South Beach Diet where I followed it very closely. I lost verly little weight but I did lose some inches. I exercise at least 4-5 days which consists of 1/2 hr cardio and 1/2 hour weight training. Nutrition wise I think I eat very well, lots of fruit, vegetables and lean meats, no potatoes. I probably could drink more water and have been trying to up my intake. What else do I need to do to reach my 130lb weight goal?
Please help me!
Thank you in advance
B Springstead 11/8/2006 Big Reg of Taking It OFF 4 of Halifax N.S writes The Free site is called fitday.com
11/2/2006 tanja of nova scotia writes Luv the show!! I look forward to each episode and hope there will be new seasons to come. I would like to see a more interactive website though with meal plans, activity routines etc. Big Reg eluded to a free website to help with meals but I can't find it. With obesity being so high in Canada I think that government should take a more active role in providing free help for those you need it. 10/30/2006 Big Reg of Taking it OFF4 of Halifax, N.S writes Hey Guy's. Just an update. Like every other participant has said. After the cameras stop rolling life goes on it doesn't get any easier. Being more of the all or nothing personality type. It's been little or nothing in extra workouts other than my new much more physically demanding job. After a 15hr day to get the 12hr workday in, I am wiped out and need as much sleep as I can get to do it again. And not for 4,5 or 6 days in a row, but 14 to 24 days an a row. I have to tell you, I am pretty played out at the end of those shifts. I had gained 25 plus lbs back over the last 2 years, and now with just controlling my "portion distortion and Calorie monitoring I am slowly Taking It OFF. I just wanted to say thanks to all the Great fans of the show and hope you all find what works for you and ultimately reach your goals! All the best from Your East Coast Buddy Big Reg!
9/27/2006 Katherine of Westbank BC writes I watched the whole show and loved all the people on it! It is amazing the change in everyone at the end of the show, you all look younger and way happier! 9/13/2006 Wildcat Wendy of Halifax writes hello Maria,
I was so pleased to get your message. I am so happy to hear your news and wish you all the best. My life is absolutely AMAZING now. I have my daughter who is like my best friend and we talk everyday. I see my granddaughter every 2nd weekend as she stays with Conni and I. She is the best. ok, so I may be biased, but really she is the best. As for everything else...live is full of surprises. I am thankful for each day I am given in the world. I own my own home...MORTGAGE free, I have a wonderful wife, supportive family, AWESOME kids and the best grand baby...what else is there in life? I am thrilled...and I am excited for you...you go girl...it will be great for you...just be yourself and it will all be ike your wildest dream come true. I wish you well. And for all of you who may be wondering...it is still a battle for me...I gained weight, lost weight, gained and now going strong to the gym, eating right and trying hard...the struggle never ends even though the cameras go away...life is unscripted and the reality is....it takes a lifetime to get here and a lot of hard work to keep it going in the right direction...just don't give up and you will win the battle....the power of positive thinking and a little sweat in the gym is all you need. GO FOR IT!!! 9/4/2006 Maria of Toronto writes Wendy inspires me. I have less to lose and much to gain. I too am about to meet a daughter I have not seen in 14 years. I applaude her and her wonderful partner. I too have lost the battle of the balancing ball on many occasion with much less dignity. Seeing her run with Big Reg was glorious. It looked like she found her calling. I love her humour and her obvious love of life. Good luck Wendy. Good health to all your family. 8/30/2006 Danny of Toronto writes Hello,
How do I go about writing messages or contacting people from the X-Weighted show?? 8/12/2006 Big Reg of Taking it OFF4 of Halifax, N.S writes 7/26/2006
Hey Vera Big Reg here. Well I got to tell you, I am doing Great! My life has done a complete 180 ever since doing the show. My personal health, realationships and work life have all greatly improved as a result of my change in life style. While watching the show everyone witnessed a metamorphasis in Old Big Reg. Remember "Less of the wrong things and more of the right things" and you will do fine! Your Buddy, Livin the good life! Big Reg
7/27/2006 Heather of Toronto writes Hello Producers of X-Weighted/Taking it Off: Could you possibly do a casting call in Toronto if you do decide to do another season of either show? I really like Taking it Off better, because more people can relate to 15 people vs 1. 7/26/2006 Vera of Halifax writes Hi...Just wondering how Reg and David are doing. Love the show Taking it off and the show Xweighted. Both have been very helpful in my recent weight loss challange of my own. Thanks everyone. Best wishes to all. 7/22/2006 Jaime of Hamilton writes To Joycelyn from X-weighted
I've been trying to locate your X-weighted message board but the URL you gave does not go to it.
Jaime 6/12/2006 Zoe Theodorou - TIO 4 Participant of Calgary writes Hi all,
Just a little update to say what's happening with me. My CD will be out by July 1st and I am very proud of it. I worked with the best LA session musicians and a Grammy winning engineer and will have a new look to my website www.zoemusic.ca very soon. Please drop by the site - and once it's up I will have samples for you to listen to, and will hopefully tour lots!! If you are in the Calgary area, I will be performing at Prince's Island Park on July 1st as part of the Canada Day celebrations from 1 - 2 p.m. on the World Stage - please drop by and say hello! As for my weight I have lost additional 15 pounds since the end of the show, and am still going strong. I must thank everyone for all of their love, support and prayers - as this whole experience has changed my life, and has helped me get the courage and strength to achieve more than just weight loss. God bless you all - and please keep in touch!
Much love,
Zoe
www.zoemusic.ca 6/5/2006 Byron Fillmore of Halifax writes Hi everyone!
Just a quick update. I am currently putting myself through "100 Days of Hell" to get myself back to my goal weight. Let's just say I am up a "Pound or 2".
Gutface "Bruce" got married in Cuba to Jeannine last month. It was an amazing time. Although he did Barf on his Stag after he tried to smoke a Cigar.
The highlight of the trip was watching him try to find something to eat. If you know Bruce's history with food and how terrible the food is in Cuba, you would have enjoyed it too.
I have quit smoking for 5 weeks now. That is quite the challenge I must say. It's nice not having to pour Javex on my fingers every time I get home from Downtown. (Hides the Nicotine stains)
I guess I am running out of things to quit. I quit eating and smoking. I guess I'll have to start being nicer to Gutface.... nah.
5/24/2006 Stephanie of Richmond Hill writes I have been watching X-weighted. It's ok. I don't really like that obstacle course at the beginning, kinda boring, couldn't you just register how everyone did and go from there. I like the new contestants, but I miss the interaction that happened in Taking it Off.
I would also like to see a more realistic excercise routine for the average person over 50. Some of the excercises are just not possible for me, what with my blood pressure, I get dizzy bending over. I wanted very much to try rock climbing, but you need to do a mini training course, and you need a partner to hold the ropes. And I have climbing equipment, but not always the time and the partner and therefore haven't been able to get started.. Anyone in Richmond Hill, Ont. interested? I have time in the daytime. Maybe another mom with family gone and some time to try something new. I work odd hours.
I wouldn't mind seeing the return of Taking it Off.
X-weighted is good, but not the same 5/19/2006 The Producers of Taking It Off of Edmonton writes Thanks for watching everyone!
There is currently a new Weight loss series airing on the Life Network called X-Weighted. Please tune in on: Tuesdays at 7AM & 7PM, Saturdays at 10AM,
Sundays at 2PM, 9PM, and Midnight. There's also discussion of a possible second season of X-Weighted. Stay tuned for information on possible casting calls in the near future. 5/15/2006 peter of edmonton writes hello, I wondered if there will be a taking it off 5 show this year or even the x weighted version or has the weight loss shows ended their run. thank you for the past shows they have been great. could you please let me know, thank you for your time on this matter. peter from Edmonton 5/10/2006 Celeste of Cobourg, ON writes I enjoyed watching Taking It Off. I particularly enjoyed watching Bruce and Byron torture each other. How have they been doing since the show ended? Did they manage to stick to their new lifestyle? 5/7/2006 Jocelyn X-weighted participant of Halifax, Nova Scotia. writes Hi folks, I'm a huge TIO fan which is the reason I auditioned for the show X-Weighted. I love the X-weighted website on Lifenetwork.ca but there is no place for folks to communicate like here on the TIO site so I started my own message board for fans of the show. You can find it at www.xweighted.proboards98.com. Hope you like it!
PS Alyson I saw you last year at the Family Expo right before I got the call back for the show. You looked amazing and I took it as a "sign" that I would get to do X-Weighted and be successful like you and it came true! You are an inspiration and I'm so happy to hear that life is going well for you. You deserve it! 4/29/2006 C. Van Brunt of Kitchener writes Can you tell me if there is any books available by Paul Plakas so that I can strengthen my daily workouts?
thanks! 4/22/2006 Alyson TIO 4 Participant of Halifax writes Hi Everyone,
It seems many are interested in how we are fairing since the end of the show. It is hard to believe it has been over a year and a half since the cameras stopped rolling. I have continued with my new lifestyle and continue to keep it off. I have maintained my daily trips to the gym and my sensible eating plan without sacrafice. Don't tell (trainer) Paul, but I have been doing his i13 stability ball/ weights workout and I LOVE it! I highly recommend it, talk about tone! I feel amazing. I look amazing and am truly enjoying everything life has to offer. I began my Degree in Social Work this past September and battled with the "freshman 15", however I only gained 10 lbs in the first few months and knocked it off in a month. I am attending school full time all year, and will graduate in October of 2007. I love the program and have found my professional calling. My health has remained stable, and my thyroid continues to be somewhat hyperactive (I must be a cockroach as it survived the radioactive iodine treatment and is alive and well, but I am dealing with it!). I have found the love of my life, it was a total fluke, met him on line after I had basically given up hope. He is from here but is currently working in Bermuda. So, I flew down in January for a blind date and we fell madly in love. He was home for a month and is now back there working again until September. I will fly down to visit him in June between summer classes. We plan to marry after I graduate. And - get this - he is a pastry chef! Of all things, and no, I won't gain all my weight back! Above all he is a beautiful man both inside and out and we can't wait to spend the rest of our lives together. So, thats my update. Life has never been better! Thanks so much for all of your continued support and well wishes. Remember, this life is what you make it, don't ever give up and take it all in stride, it pays off bigtime and most of all, love yourself and challenge yourself, you will be surprised at how much you can do! And for all the people who are dying to know, the Lingere collection is from La Senza.
Cheers, Alyson 4/7/2006 The Producers of Taking It Off and X-Weighted of Edmonton writes Thank you for watching everyone!

4/4/2006 Ian of Toronto writes Hi Guys,
I've really enjoyed watching Season 4 of TIO. I was wondering if there will be a new season, and if so will there be a casting call for the Toronto area. Thanks! 4/2/2006 Mandy of Waterloo, ON writes I have been following TIO for the past few months. Most people are writing to ask about the participants, but I am writing to ask about a personal trainer, Kris Andrews. I went to school with Kris back in 1995 in St. John's, NL. Just wondering if the trainers respond or if any of the east coast participants still have contact with him and would tell him an old friend says hi and would like to hear from him to catch up!! Thanks a million and good luck to all the contestants with their future weight lost goals.
Mandy 3/24/2006 Alison of Toronto, ON writes I have watched TIO for months now and I feel like I know and relate to each and every one of the participants! I am 26 and a singer/admin assistant just like you, Zoe! But I get the "you have such a pretty face...if only you would lose 30 lbs." My messages/questions for the cast of TIO season 4:
Big Reg: I wanna give you a bear hug! You are such a hard worker and a family man and congrats on your weight loss achievements. ZOE: GO GIRL! You are a great inspiration to me as a fellow singer and I hope to hear great things from you. Any chance I can hear any of your music ie website, cd? Would love a listen! TRINA: My bf dumped me for not being a size 2 so your story hit home with me in a way. I still feel hurt by it and I would like to know how you stay positive and strong. You really are admirable to me and congrats on your weight loss! Alyson: Nice name! hehe just wanted to tell you that you look fab and wondering where you got all the great lingerie...La Senza? Wendy: GO WILDCAT! I am glad I got to share in the positive changes and joys in your life. Hope Connie, Jenn and Kendra and your parents are all well. Congrats on your weight loss achievements! To the "Atkins Bros": Thanks for making me laugh and inspiring me to do Atkins as well. Any tips on snacks that are low carb so i wont go hungry? Also wondering if there was a website for the band Scully! You guys are great! Wondering if youve heard of my friends band in Halifax, Shameless? To the rest of the cast, congrats, you are an inspiration for all of us that needed that push to gain control of our bodies and lives. I do hope I hear back from you and from the bottom of my heart...thankyou. 3/19/2006 James Kosteck of Edmonton Alberta writes Hello. I have followed Season 4 through every episode. I realize that you folks are re-running the episodes. If so could you tell me when,at 5'1" and 260lbs I am lookin for some motivation and someone to start my journey with. I'm sure there will be someone on the next season that I will relate too!!! 1/3/2006 Sandy of Brandon, MB writes When can we expect Season 5? 1/2/2006 peter j of edmonton area writes This is an open request to all the participants of the taking it off, season four. I wondered how all of you have faired during the last year. It’s been about one year since the cameras stopped and im sure others besides me would like to know how you are all doing.
I personally need some feed back as to which diet and exercise program has continued to help you meet your needs and personal goals.
I myself need to lose about 140 lbs to get down to a slim 200lbs, im at a stage that this may be the last time I will try to lose the weight.
I have been in a morbidly obese stage for almost eleven years now and tried every fad diet there is. I had some success but like many before me I ended up weighing more than when I started. For many years I could not exercise due to a bad injury that required surgeries to correct, this was a major factor in why I gained weight along with other issues, we all have our demons which haunts us.
Im finally at a stage that my body is ready and im trying to coax my brain to follow along until it’s ready to take over.
I at one stage was considered a top athlete in a number of fields, being fat was not even on the radar. Eleven years of this affliction is more than enough, im not sure what damage Ive done to my body. The way I have lived has more than likely reduced the number of years I expected to live and the way I felt through most of them I really didn’t care. Now that has changed and I want to live life to the fullest and regain as much of my former life as possible. I now need to lose the 140 lbs and im giving myself the year of 2006 to lose the weight and hit my goals. If any of the participants from the show have any advice it would be greatly appreciated.
To the producers of taking it off and the new show x weighted when will the new show air and will there be any new show going in to production this year and where will it be set.
Thank you in advance to anybody who takes time to respond

1/2/2006 j. Jackson of Calgary writes When is the new season of Taking It Off beginning in 2006? 12/11/2005 Big Reg of Taking it OFF4 of Halifax, N.S writes Hey! Well baldeth I may be setteling in or around Edmonton soon so I may need to find a new gym, I will check it out! Thanks! Big Reg out west! 11/20/2005 Jaime of Hamilton, Ontario writes Congrats on your weight loss on Taking It Off. I really enjoyed watching you on the show. I'm glad the reruns are still running so I can continue to watch.
I was wondering how you were doing with your weightloss. Have you gotten closer to your goal weight?
I'm thinking about restarting Atkins. I did lose 45 pounds in 10 months when I stuck to it but then I gave in to cheating and regained it all back plus more. I'm now over 400 pounds and that is not good. My legs hurt all the time.I get heart palpatations. I cannot live this way any longer and if I continue down the road I am on, I probably won't.I noticed on the TIO site on your message board area, you said you used good fats and stayed away from hydrogenated fats. I also noticed on one episode at a restaurant you seemed to be cutting the fat off your beef and putting it into a cup.
Do you often cut off the fat on meat?
Jaime 11/19/2005 Denise of Ontario writes Love the show! Wondering if there is going to be a season 5 anytime soon? Thanks! 11/14/2005 Rick of Calgary writes Hi Reg i saw on the episode today you had an online calorie/nutrition guide can you please give me the link for it??
Thanks 11/13/2005 Bonny of Winnipeg writes Hi Wendy, I am an ex cafeteria staff. CONGRATULATIONS!! It takes a lot of strength and courage to do what you have done. Being able to provide a better life for my family is my main priority! Now I am not dreaming it anymore I am Living it!!!!
Take Care From Your east Coast Buddy, Working Out West Big Reg! 10/7/2005 Lori of Ontario writes Hi everyone.. I just saw the final show last night and am so sad that I won't be seeing you all every week. I am from NS (Cole Harbour) and seeing the East Coast crew every week was like being home. I came to a realization after being away for four years: People on the East Coast DO have an accent.. hahaha I have been telling everyone.. no we don't... and then I watch the show and go.. holy crap... I hear it now! So thank you all for this tid bit as well as for the entertainment and education I have gotten from your show.
It was really fun trying to figure out where you all were at times.. at Akerley where I went to school.. seeing B&B's brother in the background who I went to school with... seeing Allison at SSW.. my FAV place to go.
Good luck to you all in your future.. you have motivated me to get off my ass and get one like Allison's :)
Trina -> My husband is a big fan or yours.. haha.. he says that you have such an amazing personality and deserve much better in life.
Lori 10/4/2005 Roni of Okanagan writes I've just discovered your show and feel especially akin to Byron and Bruce on the Atkins diet. I've been on it for 2 months and have lost about 20 lbs. I say about because I didn't weigh myself in the beginning. I was too afraid and besides, I didn't have a weigh scale yet. Well I got brave and bought the scale and feel pretty good so far about the diet. I still have to keep up the research on the diet though since everyday I hear something about the Atkins Diet not being a good diet. You even have your nutrionist on here claiming the diet is not ideal. It almost seems contradictory to the Atkins element of your show and I'm wondering just how it affects the motivation of Byron and Bruce. Have they ever had any health issues with the diet? Any liver, kidney or gallstone concerns? Also, how often is everyone weighed?
I really look forward to the next episode and I applaud everyone for having the courage to go forth and let the world see into their lives. It really is an inspiration, to say the least, regarding wight loss and balancing life in general.

The 2 sites I used during the show was www.fitday.com and www.wendys.com. As I ate at wendys 3 sometimes 4 times a day I needed to know what I was eating and where was the food energy coming from Fat, carbs Protien? It was great for that! the other one is for everything else! It is a great site to keep a visual graph of where you are and where you want to go and how well you are doing at it! It calculates everything and gives it back to you in many differant ways! Good luck and have fun with it! Your east coast Buddy Big Reg!

Then Purge the junk from your house, ALL OF IT! Then strap on your shoes and start moving when ever you can and soon you will begin your body transformation! I hope I haven't made it too complicated? If you need a hand click on me on the main screen and ask me anything you want! I will be glad to help! All th best Girl! Thanks Again!
Your East Coast Buddy, 8/8/2005 Julann of Ontario writes Alyson,
Thank-you so much for your information about your thyroid. I will definately be seeking further information from my doctor. I have been out walking and watching what I eat, but still feel sluggish. I have been taking medication for 7 years now but it has been changed numerous times. I felt so much better with the higher dose, but my doctor feels my levels are quite normal with the lower one. Anyway, thanks again for the info and I will keep you posted. Have a great summer. 8/7/2005 Laurie of Halifax writes To the Halifax people... are you guys helping out the people in the new season? i think it would be cool to see the seasons combine into each other.. that way you can also see how you're doing as well... Is it going to happen? 8/7/2005 WildCat Wendy of Taking It Off 4- Halifax of Halifax writes Hello there,
Well, I have not been doing so good. I broke my tailbone a few months ago, so that set me back a lot. I put on a few pounds that I am now fighting with to get back off. Some good news is....I now go swimming and I am not scared. I actually enjoy it. I also bike ride almost EVERYDAY and it is my favorite thing to do. It is awesome exercise and I don't have to worry about the rising prices of gas. Anyway, it is my hope to shed the pounds I regained and then some. It is a life long battle and it is hard. You gain some and you lose some ...for life that will probably not change much but the attitude and the willingness to do more, to move more and to never stop is what will get me through. I will do it....I will. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that life goes on, things happen and it does get tough, but never stop believing in yourself and don't punish yourself too much when it seems that you are going backwards....keep fighting through and you will get there. We all have to know that and believe that. 8/6/2005 Clark of Ontario writes Question for Paul or Jeff,
I have been a loyal fan for all four seasons and look forward to future seasons.
I have been using a personal trainer for the past six weeks whom I have found to be very helpful. In fact my goals had to be reestablished this week since I have been progressing so well.
My questions is this, once the timeline to my goal has been reached should I discontinue use with the trainer or continue with training sessions that are more spread out ? (eg every two weeks versus every week) 8/3/2005 Alyson - TIO Participant of Halifax writes Hi Julann,
I know the frustration you are feeling all too well. I had a very overactive thyroid which had to be destroyed using radioactive iodine which has left me with no thyroid. Therefore I am now totally hypo without medication. I am now on thyroid replacement hormone and will be for the rest of my life. My doctor and I are still in the midst of trying to find the magic dose to get me back up to normal levels. I am feeling better than ever although I still feel some mild symptoms of hyper activity, like the rapid heartrate at times. Your physician should be monitoring your blood for thyroid hormone levels, they can tell from this if you are well regulated. I would suggest that if these are within normal limits and you are still feeling crappy to have a look in to other endocrine function such as pituitary and adrenal function. All impact on your metabolism and homeostasis in your body. You have every right to see an endocrinologist and get a second opinion. An internal medicine specialist may also help. Also, if you work at it you can get your energy up on your own, eat right, exercise and get out and do things despite not feeling the greatest, you will feel better just for doing that alone. There is no quick fix for thyroid problems, hormone levels take a while to level out. I hope you are able to get a firm diagnosis and get back on the road to a happy , healthy, active life.
Keep me posted. Cheers. 7/31/2005 Michelle of Clost writes Big Reg...WOW. You are a huge inspiration! I watch you and realize that just maybe I can do this whole weight loss/ healthly living thing. And I do intend to try it..no not try do it...just still trying to find a place to start..any advice? Keep up the great work and a huge THANK-YOU!! 7/31/2005 Karen of Winnipeg, Manitoba writes I think the show is great. I am currently watching the re-runs of Season 4. Weight loss is hard work. I have been working at it for over 3 years. I joined Weight Watchers and find that this has worked the best for me. Excercise is crucial and I recently decided that it had to be a part of every day. So I pack my gym bag in the morning and go to the gym directly after work. I record my workouts on a calendar and it gives me a visual to what I have accomplished for the week/month. TIO provides great information and inspiration to those who want to lose weight and create a healthy lifestyle. It would be great if TIO could have other particpants in other provinces. 7/27/2005 Zoe - TIO Participant of Calgary writes Hi all,
Some updates from me, still working out hard and have been in Los Angeles (still here at the moment) for the past two weeks mixing my record with a Grammy award winning engineer. I have managed to keep off what I lost, plus, I have lost some more weight (more inches tho) and am still toning and shaping (working out hard, eating sensibly (it really DOES become habit!) and have an "accountability" partner/friend who works out with me regularly) and am just struggling to lose those last few pounds/inches - but honestly it's not a stressful part of my life anymore - as I love my new lifestyle. I have found that on top of my workouts - regular yoga classes (I like Ashtanga) are really helping re-shape me at this point. As far as the other stuff - the record is really amazing, and Deno and I are in touch and slowly cultivating a more romantic relationship - but I am concentrating on my record right now...once that is done, then I will be able to focus more on Deno and the strong possiblity of moving back to Florida (also more convenient for me as far as my music career). Keep an ear out for my album - to be released in Jan or Feb of 2006! Thanks to all of the fans and friends for their support - and the recognition definately helps keep me accountable! Much love and blessings!
Z 7/24/2005 Julann of Ontario writes Alyson, Like you I have a thyroid problem...underactive of course. Can you tell me how you fixed your problem and how you are feeling now? I find that the medication is not working how I would expect it to be and when I ask my doctor to see a specialist he doesn't think it is necessary. Take Care, Jules 7/24/2005 Julann of Ontario writes I am presently watching the re-runs every week..sometimes twice a week. I have just had a baby and looking for some motivation to lose the extra weight. This show was entertaining {Byron and Bruce} and the producers did an excellent job entertaining the audience. Good Job you guys/ladies! P.S. Trina - kick Trevor to the curb if he can't except you for what you are! You look great either way! 7/21/2005 Chris Borden of Halifax writes Hey Big Reg,
Really enjoy seeing you on the show, I relate very well to you.
Do you find working out at the gym is more difficult or would you rather do activities (so you don't realize) you're working out.
During the show did you use a dietician? What about that personal trainer. How long was he there with you?
What can I expect a trainer to cost?
Thanks
Chris 7/21/2005 Big Reg of Taking it OFF4 of Halifax, N.S writes Hey Chris! Big Reg here! I like the structure of the regular workouts and counting on a set amount of calorie burn but also the flexability other activites can give you as in the when and the where! I personaly in trying to be dedicated to a more active life style have diversified my activities, splitting up "workout time" into many different activities for my whole family to enjoy and benifit from with me. During the show I saw a dietian for a half hour at the begging of the show. As I lisened to the do's and don't I felt the majority of the information was common sense and that I knew it already, but just never used it? Now it was time to use it! As far as Holloywood Jay my Trainer He was there 4hr's /week for 24 weeks mon - thur, 1hr aday. His rate was $30.00/hr with a discount starting above 10 hrs paid for. I would say having the knowledge of a personal trainer to focus your energy in the right place can make all the difference in the world, between good intentions gone bad and a real sweet Victory! You can in 5-10 hrs with the right trainer gain a lot of the tools(Knowledge) needed to make your weight loss effort a success! Give Jay a call at the Sackville Sports Stadium Tell him Big Reg Sent You! Take Care Chris!
7/21/2005 Producers of Taking It Off of Edmonton writes Casting for our new weight loss series, X-Weighted has been completed. Please check back next may for a new season. Tune in to Life Network, Spring 2006 to watch X-Weighted. 7/19/2005 Alyson - TIO Participant of Halifax writes I guess it's ok to spill the beans now about how we are doing... I have managed to maintain my new lifestyle, continue to lose weight - very slowly but have seen more inches than pounds fall off over the last few months. I am about 15lbs (give or take a few)away from where I want to be. I have decided I am much more interested in how I feel and how my clothes fit than I am in the number on the scale. I have put on quite a bit of muscle, toned and firmed even more - you should see me in the lace undies now!! I am wearing a size 9 (started at a 16-18 range). I go to the gym every day, still eat a well balanced diet and well deserved treats! My thyroid is still an issue, it is taking time to regulate my meds for it but I am on the up swing and am feeling much better. I still smoke (groan) and have promised my new Beau I am quitting prior to starting school in September. I have been accepted in to the Dalhousie University School of Social Work and hope to finish my degree in 2 years. I am currently working full time in Research and feel very free and fulfilled. My new (a few months now) man is wonderful, caring, considerate, and supportive. We have a fantastic time together and did I mention he is totally HOT! He's a keeper! Overall, I feel like a new and improved me. I have kicked adversity in it's ugly ass. I continue to get great feedback from viewers on a daily basis and it just adds to the motivation to continue. My attitude about life in general has not changed, we all have the power to change. Cheers to you all (from both me and my ass)and thanks for the amazing support from both near and far. 7/18/2005 Sandy of Brandon, MB writes LOVED the show, I feel like I know you all!! I just watched a repeat show and realized that I miss knowing how you are doing? Any chance of an update? Just when your Season 4 aired, I had started a weight loss program (need to lose 75 lbs) and the show "kept me honest", as I felt that I wasn't alone as I was working towards a healthy goal. About the time the show finished, my life got insanely busy and I began faltering. Unfortunately, I started the slippery slide backwards ( lost 22 pounds and have gained back 8 ). It makes me sad, and I DO want to make this happen. No matter what anyone says, THIS IS THE HARDEST THING TO DO! The emotional attachment to food is my biggest addiction. A shout out to Trina - you rock, girl!! I too, say what I think. Wendy, I hope your Mom is doing well.
Would LOVE to hear from all of you with updates! Cheers, Sandy 7/16/2005 Clair Hipditch of St. John's Newfoundland writes I was wondering why the casting calls are limited to only Halifax, Vancover and Calgery? Also, will you ever be looking for interesting people from other cities... say... in Newfoundland? haha. I am a huge fan of the show.. not to mention I'm an over weight woman with a story, looking for motivation. I would do just about anything to be on your program and was just wondering if in the future you'll be looking elsewhere for participants.
Anyway, thank you for your time.

Shauna of Calgary writes
Hey Shauna. Big Reg Here. Since the end of the show it's been a real roller coaster for me as far as where I wanted to be and where I am. I wanted to just catch my breath if you will and soak it up as the show aired and we saw what you all saw for the first time. I wanted to see if I could live what I had learned, and for the mean time see if I could maintain my weight and not gain it back. Well up until the end of March I was the same weight I was when I returned from Calgary in mid December. I ate a little more than when I was shooting the show and still ran some in the winter, then I was hurt at work and laid up for 12 weeks. When I went back to the gym and stepped on the scale I was shocked! I gained over 10lbs. I was really dissapointed! But I knew I had the tools to recondition myself and begin another weight loss only this time I am 100lbs lighter starting! Now I am only 6lbs heavier than when I retured from Calgary and just cleared by my doctors to start my workouts again! Next stop 230lbs!!! Wish me luck! Your East Coast Buddy, Big Reg! 7/14/2005 Peggy of Pearce writes I am watching your last show of the season right now and I just had to write and say how proud I am of all of your participants. I have been following their progress on and off through the season and find it inspiring to watch their successes and interestingly enough, their failures--I think it was the humanity and reality that those failures revealed. I am a very active marathon runner myself and I guess what I really wanted to say was that I still need inspiration some days, still feel fat and ridiculous some days, am still convinced that today might be the day I stop it all together and double my body size. It's a metaphor for life, fitness. Can I do it--'Life', or this run today? Can I drag myself into the battle today? Will I see beauty and joy in my day/run? Self esteem struggles are often unrelated to your actual weight, but related to your inner self. Big Reg talked about that disconnection between inner and outer reality. In terms of change in fitness/sport levels he seemed to make the most strides yet he still struggled with his self-perception. None of them are different than any of us, fit, thin, or not. As a nurse I was the most thrilled for the participants whose fundamental health was in jeopardy--Wendy, Reg, David, maybe those Newfie boys (who were hilarious by the way). The change in David's skin colour alone belied the improvement in his health--Wendy too. Anyway....love the show...and thanks for the inspiration!
Reg, regarding your sore hip...talk to an athletic therapist (like a special physiotherapist for athletic people). It may be your periformis muscle which is a little bitty muscle in your butt that can pull on your pelvis if you don't keep it stretched. Mine kills at times. I agree that running is like a drug....I used to hate it...I mean really really hate it...but then that magical endorphin rush hit my neurons...and here I am! Glad to hear we have another recruit to the Cult of runners (Moonie forehead dots are optional)!

Trina 7/12/2005 Shauna of Calgary writes Very much enjoyed the show and am wondering if anyone would like to give us any updates on how things are going...anyone reach goal weight? Thanks 7/12/2005 Karen Elworthy of Sydney, NS writes Hello,
Karen from Sydney, NS, here. I'm just wondering if your producers will have people from Sydney, NS, on a future episode of TIO? 7/6/2005 Zoe - TIO Participant of Calgary writes Hi Irene!
Zoe here...thank you for your kind words - FYI - you had asked in an earlier post about my CD, just an update I have been busy - writing some new tunes and I will be leaving for the states in a little less than two weeks to finish my CD (yay!) - and currently my publicist has informed me that a January 2006 release date is what we will be shooting for - keep an ear out for it on the radio! Thanks again for watching the show - honestly, sometimes I thought that my life and what happened was no big deal - but it's cool when other people can relate to you and you can make a difference! Keep up your running (I give you props - I am not a big fan of running!) - you will definitely see progress if you stick to it (that's the way I felt about weight loss - some up and some down moments...but now its a habit, and it's kind of addictive!). All the best to you!
Take care! 7/3/2005 Irene of Thunder Bay writes I am still so inspired by all of your stories, I want all of you to know that even your insecurities and weakness speak volumes to me. I can relate to that, not only the victory, but over coming defeat. I know that a lot of people feel the same. Great show, great participants, I hope all of you happiness in your new "lighter" life. 6/29/2005 Samara of Calgary, AB writes Hi, I just wanted to ask Trina where she got her lymphatic cleanse in Calgary because i have been trying to find one everywhere and i saw in the preview for next week that your results were impressive! I hope you can at least give out a clue as to where you recieved your treatment! Thanks and great job on the show! All the best in the following weeks! 6/29/2005 Big Reg of Taking it OFF4 of Halifax, N.S writes Hey Big Reg Here!
I was very slow to start running infact I had lost most of my weight before I could run for more than one minute with out stopping. I walked on the treadmill for 6 months on the highest level of incline at 3.2- 3.4mph for 1 hr at a time. Soon Jay had me interval training. Walk 5 min run 1 min, walk 5 run 2 and so on. Then I got to running for 20 -25 min straight at any speed just don't stop, then gradually incresed the speed. Then I ran for 40 -45 min non stop at 5mph to 8mph. The I started running out doors more and running in some local charity races. It seems every race I am getting a little better, a little lighter and a little faster too. I have to say I have not had much in the way of pain that the Advil won't fix when it rears it's ugly head, But I must say my right hip sometimes bothers me. Feels like a pinched muscle? There is one thing I do notice is I don't have sore feet anymore now that I am over a hundred lbs lighter than I was a year ago! Your body won't scream for help any more, if you help it! All the best and keep moving! Your East Coast Buddy, Big Reg! 6/28/2005 Baldeth of Edmonton writes I just wanted to say that all of the participants of all four seasons have been very inspirational. I have a question for Big Reg, or any of the larger men who took up runnig for that matter. Did any of you experience trouble with shin splints or some other lower body injury when you started running? I have had shin splints for years now and the only activity that does not cause me pain is skating, I play hockey several times a week in the winter. I would appreciate any of the contestants speaking to this issue. Good luck and thank you in advance for your attention. 6/22/2005 Big Reg of Taking it OFF4 of Halifax, N.S writes Hey Shelly! Thanks for the email! I was the same weight as I was when I returned to Halifax from Calgary after the show stopped filming, right up untill the beginning of April. Then I was injured at work. A box of stove pipe fell on me and cut through my forearm right to the bone then slideing off the side leaving a 6" gash of severed muscle, nerves, ligaments and tendins! I spent the next 8 weeks sitting and healing. Having to keep my arm above my heart to control the swelling of my fingers and the pain in my arm. I have in just the last 3-4 weeks been able to start running again. I ran the 10k race in Blue Nose International Marathon May 22nd. I put a team in the 12hr Relay For Life in Sackville, June 10th and Alyson joined me there. We got the longest Conga line in Sackville's History going with about 800-1000 people in a Conga line streching almost a quarter mile! Then I just ran in the Fathers Day run June 19th. As I am able to get back at it I am keeping it fun and me active by running in some of the great local runs being held around the city. I am running in the Bedford days 5k this Sunday morning the 26th of June at 8:30 am and a Real Big Run I am really looking forward to is the H.B.C Canada Day 10k run at the commons in Halifax. Check them out! And YES I am going to the track(Met field,Sackville) just about every night between 6-7 pm for a 5, 8 or 10k run, jog, walk? So, Hey! Come one come All! And join me! Remember, You know me, But I may not know you, So come out and say Hi! And take a step closer to the body you want and lets run, walk or jog together! Your East Coast Buddy Big Reg!
6/19/2005 Shelley of Halifax writes Dear Reg, Are you still going to the field in Sackville? How are you doing??? 6/17/2005 Big Reg of Taking it OFF4 of Halifax, N.S writes Hey Casey, I have to tell you, in regards to your situation, you are playing with fire! You have to do what is good for you! Cut back on your partners portions to what they need, not what they want! And it's fine to bond over a meal with friends, just don't follow the crowd but rather lead by example and eat only what you need! Food don't taste as good as thin feels! It's true! Your East Coast Buddy Big Reg! 6/17/2005 Big Reg of Taking it OFF4 of Halifax, N.S writes Hey Irene! Thanks for the email! I started really slowly. My first day was 15 min just walking on a slight grade on treadmill. After a few weeks I was up to 30 min still just walking. It was 2 months before I even tried running, and I could only run for 1min then I had to rest for 5! As time went on and the lighter I got, the easier it got. I have found out I truly love to run and I think it stems from remembering back when you were a kid and could run like the wind. The feeling of just running as fast as you can, pushing yourself for a longer distance or a better time is so satisfying. Set a GOAL AND KEEP IT! Don't let life get in the way of your success! Keep records of your times and when you run walk or jog, these will be very valuable when you don't feel like continuing someday! I am currently running 1 mile then grab a sip of water and walk 100 meters then run another mile, and so on, for a 8-10k run in about 50min to 1hour 5min. I think you are doing great! Keep it up you will feel when it's right to run 4 or 5 min then walk 1min, and run 6-7min and walk 1min and so on. You are doing it right Irene! Bottom line do what ever it takes to keep it fresh and fun for you! All my best Your East Coast Buddy Big Reg!
6/14/2005 Shirley of Vancouver writes Hello everyone...just want to say how much I love the show! I look forward to it every week. It's wonderful inspiration. You are all such down-to-earth real people struggling with the day-to-day challenges of losing weight and getting fit. I feel like I know you all and want so much for you all to succeed. I can see how great you all look and how happy and more positive you have become through the weeks. I watch the show every week and even try to catch the repeat in the middle of the week. I too am on the health and fitness path and the show is another element of my inspiration. Love you all.... 6/13/2005 Irene of Thunder Bay writes Zoe did you get your Cd done? You guys were all inspirational!!! Congratulations!!! Reg you ran the 10k? how did you start and build up to the 10K? I started with "Fresh Air Experience" friendly run and right now are doing 3min run and 1 min walk for 5k. I feel frustrated with the lack of progress. 6/13/2005 David of Calgary TIO4 of Calgary writes Hi Cathy I believe that you are referring to the ketosis test strips. These identify ketones in your urine which is a by-product of fat burning. These can be purchased at most drug stores or where they sell diabetic supplies. Good luck and remember that it does not matter how dark it goes, ketones are ketones and if they are present then you are on the right track. Dave. 6/13/2005 Casey of Vancouver writes I've been watching the show and each time I do it wills me to get off the couch and get moving! About 2 years ago I lost 60 pounds, and have been in a bit of a rut ever since. I never reached my goal weight - I'm still 15 pounds away from it. I cannot seem to shed those last 15 pounds - despite trying to be active. I think that I somehow believed that I could lose weight and then not have to worry anymore. I guess it will always be a daily battle. I also now have a partner who has a huge appetite and co-workers who like to bond over eating out. It's tough to say no. I'll continue to watch the show, hoping for the inspiration to make this happen for myself..once and for all. Thank you for having the courage to inspire others! 6/11/2005 Marnie of Ottawa writes Congrats to all of you for doing such a great job!
You are all an inspiration to those suffering in silence with weight issues.

5/29/2005 Sarah of Orangeville On writes Hi Reg,
Congratulations on your success. I recall an episode where you had a free food calculator. You were entering information for sandwich content (I think) and you were changing the condiments to alter the fat/caloric info. Could you please tell me what site that would be? Keep up the good work!
Thanks Sarah
5/29/2005 Cheryl of Halifax writes Hi Patrina,
I know what you mean when you say that you feel like Jessica Rabbit, the vamp temptress, outside you look like Jabba the Hut. I feel the exact same way. I am 5'5 and weighed 250lbs when I started this amazing weight loss program. It is called Michael Thurmonds Six Week Body Makeover. The package is about $140 Canadian which I know sounds like allot (or at least it did to me), but the results are worth it. The first six weeks I lost 16 lbs, I would have lost more if I followed the exercises in the plan. The package comes with everything you need to start including the exercise band, the eating out guide and the 24 hour support forms. The exercises are so easy, they consist of you, a chair, a door and the band, (I also have a bad back, two kids and two car accidents). The program teaches you what foods put together will help your unique body lose weight (no expensive, special diet food). It isn't a one size fits all program, you have to go through it and determine your body shape and blueprint, and then you match that with one of the custom eating plans. About 80% of the weight loss comes from the eating plan for your body type; the other 20% comes from the 2 times per week that he suggests doing the exercises. I have been following this plan now for a short while and my total weight loss so far is 35lbs (I am now 215lbs) and many, many inches (my mom also lost 21 lbs in the first 6wks). I have tried e-diets, weight watchers, curves, the gym and many more; none have worked with results that kept me motivated enough to keep going. I hope that you can give this a try because it does work, and you also get the 24 hour web support and chat rooms included in the package price as well as the eating out guide. We deserve to look in the mirror and see what we feel inside, BEAUTIFUL!!! Good luck in your journey, I know if I can do it, you can too. Cheryl

From the first show I looked up to you becaus we were the same weight and we needed to lose the same amount of weight. I started losing weight myself ( about 15 lbs) and another 80 or so to go. I would love to talk to you someday and share some weight loss tips. 5/26/2005 Big Reg of Taking it OFF4 of Halifax, N.S writes Hey I just wanted to extend an open invitation to anyone in the Halifax Metro area trying to get or stay fit to join me at the track, Met Field in Lwr. Big Reg 5/24/2005 Big Reg of Taking it OFF4 of Halifax, N.S writes Hey Guys! Just an update. I ran in the 10k portion of the Bluenose International Marathon Last Sunday. It was CRAZY weather! Sheet rain 70mm. wind gusts to 90km and still 5000 showed up from all around the world and ran! I am just so impressed with runners in general, their drive and determination is inspirational! I surrounded myself this weekend with their energy and friendship at the Halifax Metro Center and for me it was powerful. I highly recommend going into your local running/walking room and going on one of their free frindship walks or runs and feel what I felt! IT WAS GREAT! The thing is everyone there is not trying to live healthy THEY ARE LIVING HEALTHY! 5/22/2005 barb of kelowna writes Hi there! just wanted to drop a line and say how much I have enjoyed the show, and how sad I am that it's over. I hope that everyone will post how they are doing with their weight loss. I feel like I know each of you and would like to know how you are all doing. 5/19/2005 Shirley of Vancouver writes WOW, what a great site. I watch the show all the time. It is such GREAT inspiration. I have done all the diets and lost and gained a ton of pounds over the years. I've started AGAIN...and yet it was hard to get started. My brain kept making all the excuses why not to start. But I'm 55, 5'5"and when I started I was 215 pounds. I don't want my lifestyle compromised any longer...I don't want my weight to stop me from REALLY enjoying and participating in my life. My son is getting married New Year's Eve...that is my incentive. I want to look good in the pictures! I've joined a gym and after a couple of months of digging my heels in, going and not going - I committed and am not HOOKED. I work out 4 to 5 times a week doing 35 to 40 minutes of aerobics and another 30 to 40 minutes of strength training. And I'm watching my calorie intake. I feel SO great and I've lost 7 pounds so far. My body feels stronger, my skin looks better and my clothes fit beeter. I admire what you have all accomplished and thank you all for the inspiration...GREAT SERIES! and P.S. Patrina, you can do it, you can do it, you can do it! 5/19/2005 Wildcat Wendy of Halifax writes Hello Patrina,
WOW! I can really identify with what you are saying. I, like you have struggled. I have always been afraid that I would not live to meet my daughter. I did! I finally did it. When I first started trying, I said, "There is NO way I can do this. I can barely walk so how could I even consider running a track? I thought for sure I would have a heart attack right there in front of the cameras. I understand the pain of not having money to buy special foods, pills or machines. I thought I would never get out of my 'RUTT", but ....I did! One foot at a time, one second at a time. Before you know it, the foot became 2 and 3.... and the seconds became minutes, hours days and weeks. I am now into months. WOW! If you had told me this a year ago I would have laughed at you. I KNOW YOU CAN DO IT TOO! Just take one foot, one second and don't EVER look back! We will all be waiting for you at the finish line! WE all love you and know your pain....we will be here to guide you and help you in your start. We will give you the kick you need, the hug you deserve and the you that is in there. Just do it! Don't wait another minute....this is the minute to start. You will be amazed at what you will find at the end of one day, one week, one month. I understand your fears and concerns. As a mother, grandmother , wife and woman....I understand you. I want you to know that you can contact me anytime you want to. Take care and remember...YOU ARE WORTH THE EFFORT, THE TIME and THE RESULTS! God bless you Patrina!

A lot of times people will have a heart attack or mild stroke first and have to do the weight loss with an impairment that you do not have now. keep that in mind! The site I was on that day was www.wendys.com click on food then Build a Meal. The one I use for total calculation including workouts, cals burnt, cals taken in with charts and graphs to give it life is www.fitday.com . It's a great site that will fit any budget FREE! Best of luck! Your buddy Big Reg!

God speed in your weight loss... Rhonda 5/16/2005 Jaclyn TIO Participant of Calgary writes Hi Patrina,
Please take heart because when you say "I don't have an ounce of an excuse" I believe you are at a place where good things can start to happen for you. All of us, regardless of our size or goals, had to run out of excuses (and believe me I had a lot to choose from) before we were willing to make the necessary changes for a better life.
Those changes came for me in the form of the big and small decisions I made every day about what I ate and drank and how I cared for my body. I didn't always make the best choices (old habits die hard) but because I had run out of excuses I had no option but to make a better choice the next time and the time after that. Eventually they all added up to a change, not just in my lifestyle, but in my life.
Just like there isn't a "one size fits all" t-shirt that would every fit ALL women (what were clothing manufacturer's thinking???) there isn't a "one size fits all" recipe for weight loss. As you saw on the show there were a variety of tactics used over the course of six months by all the participants as they tried to figure out what worked best for them. Despite different approaches, the end result six months later was a group of people who were much healthier and happier with themselves. All of us became better caretakers of our own bodies. You can do the same Patrina - I hope you'll start today.
Good luck to you and keep us updated with your progress.
Cheers to you, Jaclyn.
5/16/2005 Trina TIO Participant of Calgary writes I'm a big believer in not reinventing the wheel Patrina, and what I mean by that is find someone who has been in a similar weight situation as you and they've reached their goal, ask them how the did it, find out what worked for them and what didn't, David has had some amazing success but not with out his challenges as we all did. Learn from our mistakes to reach your goals easier...I like Alyson's advice 10lbs at a time. A previous participant from a different season used paper clips strung together to have a visual reminder of her weight loss success. I recently went on Oprah and her word of advice keep running through my head "Only once you start treating yourself as well as you treat others can you really overcome your life long battle with weight" I wish you all the very Best please feel free to write in anytime.....I dont think any of us have all the answers (especially ME) but I do know one thing food doesn't taste as good as thin feels.... Cheers Trina 5/15/2005 Lindsay - TIO Participant of Calgary writes Dear Patrina,
I applaud your courage to write an e-mail to this site. It is that same voice that put me in my car and led me to the TIO audition last year.... the voice that is in all of us, because we all know what we must do in our heart of hearts. So- you've accomplished the first (and most important step)! You do not need to go on tv to change your life, either! You start with a decision... and you follow it up with many more good decisions on a daily basis. Start with a small time frame, like a week.... and decide to make 1 really good decision each day about how to look after yourself. I think you will find that being good to yourself feels good for your soul... then it shows physically... which will then further impact the way you feel. I respect that as a busy mom, you have many challenges. I respect that it is hard. Trina and I have often talked about how making good decisions for our children is easy and automatic, but that somehow making good decisions for ourselves seems more challenging.... Well, I think it's time for you to love yourself as much as you love your beautiful children. You CAN do this, you WILL do this, and your life can change starting now. We all understand... and we all believe in you! Warm Regards,
Lindsay 5/13/2005 Alyson - TIO Participant of Halifax writes Patrina,
Good for you for taking that first step - you wrote to us, you agree you do not want to live the rest of your life this way and you have important reasons to make positive changes in your life. You are right - this extra weight will kill you, but you have the power to change it. I think one problem a lot of people have is looking at the total amount they have to lose - it gets overwhelming if you tell yourself you have 200lbs to lose so perhaps start with a goal of 10lbs, after that go after another 10 etc. It is a lifestyle change you have to make, not a diet. I am such a creature of habit and it was very hard to change and even now some days it is hard to get to the gym and eat the right food but I remind myself how fantastic I feel, how much more I can do and it keeps the motivation fresh. Go for a walk, remove a bad food choice and add a good one in it's place. Have a 1 day a week treat day, get up and move. Go to the gym (I don't want to hear "I can't I am too big.") There is a man at my gym who is well over 400lbs I am sure and he has lost 70lbs so far and everyone - yes, even the skinny blond chicks - cheer him on. We all support him. If you can not afford a gym try the YMCA, go for a swim, take a walk, dance in your living room, just stay in motion as much as possible. I know it's hard when you feel like a bag of shit but once you feel and see the difference it will carry you to your goal. Go for it Miss Jessica Rabbit, let yourself out!
Cheers, Alyson 5/13/2005 Zoe TIO Participant of Calgary writes Hi Patrina,
I just read your post - and yes, you do have a lot to overcome - and I believe (and so do a lot of other people) that you can do it. Remember it's a step by step thing - it really is, and your first courageous step was to write down (or in your case email) your situation to someone. That is amazing and I commend you for it Patrina!! That's your first huge step. Just add another step to it - if you are on a budget, just eat smaller portions for example. Either take an extra 1/2 hour in the morning or at night to get a brisk walk into your day if you can. I understand that your situation is unusual - but I believe you really want to make a difference in your lifestyle. Remember, it will take some time and effort, but you can do it - and it's so wonderful that you know, and you stated that you are a vibrant sexy woman - good for you. You are accountable to yourself Patrina - hold yourself to this goal girl!!! All the very best to you - you are not alone! 5/12/2005 Big Reg of Taking it OFF4 of Halifax, N.S writes 5/11/2005
Hey Patrina, Big reg here. Let me say this "I HEAR YOU!" I to am 39 and was last spring 350lbs and yes It killed me to walk, much less run. 5/11/2005 Patrina of Ontario writes Well, I'm sitting here working up the courage to write to you all. I LOVE this show. It is frank an honest. Oddly enough, it made me feel a bit...OK, alot pathetic. I am a 39 year old happily married mother of 3 and I weigh 360 lbs and don't have an ounce of an excuse. I do have the time to do the exercise. I just can't seem to find a reason why, even though I rationally know I have plenty of reasons. One of my children has Down Syndrome, and she will need me long after the others grow up and leave, but I am not sure I will be here to help her. I'm pretty sure I won't. It's just become what seems like an insurmountable thing to take on now that I don't feel anything I do will make much difference. I am very easily winded, and my back kills me on exersion, but I am SURE some of you had this problem when you started as well. When you started the season by running around that track, I thought, "There's no way I can even do that!" We are very low income, so chicken breasts and herbalife are out for me. But again, I am pretty sure these are just excuses. I am a wonderful, sexy vibrant woman, trapped inside this body. Inside I feel like Jessica Rabbit, the vamp temptress, outside I look like Jabba the Hut. I am trapped in a prison of my own making. I know this, I am an educated woman. I graduated from broadcasting college many moons ago thinking I was going to be some hotshot radio or TV personality. How the mighty have fallen. I need help. I live rurally, so my resources are limited. I know this show doesn't cover people in Ontario, but if any of you know of where I can get the kick in the ass I need, I'd appreciate it. I am beginning to think its an emergency.
Thanks for Listening,

Anyways congrats again on the weight loss everyone.. hope you can keep it off! 5/1/2005 Chris Heward of Edmonton writes Hello everyone. I was reading the posts about the eliptical machine. I used the eliptical machine more than anything else while I was on the taking it Off show. At the end of the show we had to test and re-run the mile and the huge staircase from hell. At the beginning of the season that put me in an ambulance! And Paul you were there. At the end of the show, I was the only participant to RUN BACK DOWN the stairs and I improved my time going up that staircase from hell as well. There was no ambulance just faster easier time running up and down. Then we went to the one mile run. I had the worst congestion cold I have ever had during these and I still went faster. So I am telling you from a guy who lived by it, that the eliptical machine works for stamina, strength, and overall health in any sport. Plus, it is easier on the knees. So no offence Paul, I still love ya, but this is coming from a guy who proved it works! Good luck everyone, keep at it!
Chris Heward. 4/28/2005 David of Winnipeg writes Love the show. One of the best on TV. One reason why it is best is that it doesn't do the cheap U.S. stuff; the show is about the participants, not the show's trainers/nutritionists etc. mugging for the camera.
A criticism: The crack to the lifeguard about having to get the big men out of the pool - not funny, in the least. Anytime Trina 4/19/2005 John S of St. Albert, Alberta writes Wow! Season 4 is over. Boo. I really enjoyed the new format and found the folks from Halifax hilarious. They're right about Albertans having a touch less sense-of-humour!
I notice the forum has taken on an "ellipitical or not" debate. Finally, someone spoke their mind. Thanks Paul!
I train extensively for mountaineering and have found the ellipitical only good for keeping myself active if I have an impact related injury. It kept me going through an Achilles injury last year, but other than basic cardio strength, did nothing to maintain my sport-related strength.
If you want to simply burn calories and reduce your waist size, the ellipitical would do it I guess. But, if you want to chase your kids across a soccer field, climb a mountain or other activities, I think the machine is pretty useless.
As to body builders using them, I submit that 90% of BB's are not very fit at all. They do very little cardio and spend their time building mass for appearance. I do weights to build strength, not size. The fact that BB's use the ellipitical means little as their goals are not fitness related.
One thing that I think will lead to many "relapses" is the set of standards that many of the participants use to measure success. I notice that few have fitness or sport-related goals. They are focused on the scale and on appearance. I have found that by having fitness related activities I can't do without, it means I must keep fit to do the things I love.
I also completely agree with Paul on "Men's Beauty" magazines. Those mags focus solely on appearance, and mostly on fad ways to have the elusive "six pack." They are a waste of time! Most of their advice is based on short-cuts that don't work and they never talk about life-long fitness.
Great show! Keep going and here's to hoping for a longer season... 4/19/2005 Belinda H of Scarborough, ON writes when will your show include participants from Ontario? 4/19/2005 Zoe (TIO Participant) of Calgary writes Eating every 2-3 hours and drinking 3-4 L of water daily this is my guideline:

Protein shake=(1/2 cup frozen berries, scoop iso whey, 1/2 cup water)
Snack:
1/2 cup oatmeal made w/soy milk, dried berries, cinnamon

1/2 cup barley or brown rice (or quinoa or other whole grain) cooked in low sodium chicken broth
3 oz meat (chicken breast, lean beef or pork) grilled - olive oil spices, whatever you want
Some kind of veggie (steamed or raw)
Snack:
15 almonds & piece of fruit - OR 1 oz cheese and piece of fruit
Dinner:
Salad (dark leafy greens & spinach), chopped veggies-various, try to include cruciferous ones like cauliflower and broccoli and colourful ones as well, 1 oz crumbled feta, chick peas or lentils (1 tbsp), 2 oz chopped chicken or lean meat, some avocado, strawberries (basically make yourself a nice colourful salad with protein) balsamic vinager, olive oil, herbs and spices to taste
Snack:
Yogurt (1/2 cup) NOT fat free, just lowfat OR a piece of fruit or something
Eat all of your meals about 3 hours before you goto bed. I may also have a protein bar after a really hard core workout.

Trina 4/11/2005 Natasha Kravtsov of Winnipeg writes Dear producers I have watched most of the season's of the show. As some one who has always had weight issues it is at times inspirational, emotional and always poignant. I just wanted to pass on a note of congratulations to Reg. He has been outstanding. I loved it that you showed him conquering the stairs by the light house. Way to go Reg. Keep it up.
Sincerely, Natasha from Winnipeg 4/11/2005 Big Reg of Halifax, N.S writes Big Reg Here!

4/10/2005 Wynn Schneider of Canmore, AB writes Once again, a wonderfully inspiring season. We get to feel we are starting to know these people and rooting for them for 6 months and then they are gone! Any chance of follow-up shows? Would love to follow their progress as well as use them for workout buddies and inspiration. Thanks again for making this show! 4/9/2005 Lisa of Collingwood ON writes Ok I am bummed now that the show is done for another year. I always said season 2 was my favourite but you guys won my heart this year. I loved the 1 hour format too. Congrats to all the participants. I would love to see an update show on ALL of season 2 participants as well as season 4. 4/8/2005 Stephanie of Richmond Hill , Ontario writes I just wanted to comment on what Paul wrote. I have used my elliptical for almost two years and do go on it at least 3 days a week since I bought it.
My body has improved and, I feel great, and much more flexible. The fact that it burns calories means that whatever I eat during a day to make up my allowed 1700 calories, I now have 500 calories less.
[I burn off 500 on the elliptical per day] This means weight loss in general. So I have no complaints. It also depends on ones age and interests. I don't enjoy sports, I don't do well on teams, I know I won't go to a gym, so that leaves walking. I could go swimming, but I don't like to get wet and it is time consuming to go to a pool. I do swim occasionally, and I am a good swimmer, the actual swimming isn't a problem. Not all of us strive to be fit as a trainer. 4/6/2005 Shan of Kelowna writes I'm sure I'm not the only fan of the show, who would be interested in knowing more about what these people are eating during the week. As the diet part, make up about 80% of weight loss. Just a thought. This show rocks. 4/6/2005 Shannon of Kelowna writes I LOVE this show. It is so interesting and inspirational. And, it features "real" people. I'm so sorry to see this one end, but can't wait for the next one. These guys need to have the next show in Kelowna 4/4/2005 Rob Sawchuk of Calgary writes Hello all viewers and Participants. I'm just writing to say I'm enjoying watching all the brave souls you took on this Challenge. It's been very enlightening to a lot of people and you've all made huge steps in your life.
Halifax team, you’re very entertaining. Reg you're a mad man at the gym, GREAT WORK!
Calgary Team, great job as well. Dave, I really enjoy your story and wish you the best, don’t get discouraged when the weight lose slows down. Just keep mixing up your exercise and it will keep working. Hey it's still coming off. Zoe, your voice is amazing. Good things are gonna happen.
It was also a very interesting time actually being a small part of Jaclyn's continuing journey. She's my girl and I'm so proud of her. She gets more beautiful everyday.
As for a certain “Trainer” hinting about Jaclyn losing inches with a little help (lypo), as was see on the highlights for next episode, let me set him straight. I was there everyday, watching her struggle to go from work to the gym, find time to eat, and still be as wonderful as she is. So please know she worked very hard and deserves more credit than that. To this “Trainer”, don’t belittle someone’s progress, its comments like that that scare people away from taking a healthy step in the right direction. For a so called expert, you should know better. With an attitude like that, Good Luck with business. 4/4/2005 Tracy of Cornwall, Ontario writes I have followed the show since Season 1 and think it is awesome and inspiring while remaining firmly grounded in reality. The show may lack a certain “glamour” but it also lacks the “I-was-a-fungus-growing-under-a –rock- until-I-lost –30- pounds-now-my-life is- perfect” propaganda that is fed to us by many other weight loss testimonial shows. (I won’t mention the particular show that comes to mind, enough to say that the “L” word – L being “Lost” is in the title!) The message that is clearly conveyed on your show is that losing weight is tough, and probably for most of the participants one of the hardest things they will ever do, but it is a journey well worth taking. To see everyone’s results from week to week as they persevere through thick and thin is both refreshing and highly motivating. Each and every one deserves a big pat on the back for letting millions of viewers share their private struggles and successes. You are all doing so well and should be proud! For future shows, have you ever considered taping a segment in Ontario? We certainly have our share of chubbies and chubbettes here, myself included! 4/2/2005 Wendy of Caesarea Ontario writes I have been watching Taking it Off since the first season and I just wanted to say that it is a REALLY GREAT SHOW! I have a great deal of respect for all of the participants.
What courage it takes to put yourself in the public eye!! To the current cast of TIO:
"CONGRATULATIONS to all of you! Regardless if you reach your goal weight or not you have all done a tremendous job and should be very proud of yourselves!" I look forward to many more seasons of Taking it Off. 4/2/2005 Seth of Victoria, BC writes I think everyone on here is kicking some serious "A". Good work to everyone! 3/30/2005 Zoe (TIO Participant) of Calgary writes I just want to add that investing in a heart rate monitor is a great thing to help you see where you are with your workouts. I used one for the duration of the show and continue to do so. You can really measure how hard you are working, and where you should be in order to improve cardio and lose weight. Sweating is not enough of a gage - your heart rate (depending on age, etc.) should be at a certain rate for a duration of 20-30 minutes in order to really get your “fat burning” going. It has really helped me, because before I had it, I don't believe that I was working out to my full capacity – even though I thought I was. Ciao! 3/30/2005 Simone of Toronto writes I just wanted to say that I think EVERYONE is doing such a fantastic job! Weight loss isnt easy and you all are doing so much more than most people...and on TV even! Keep up the great work. Remember, the scale only shows a number, what you're doing for your health is SO much more important! 3/29/2005 Mark of Edmonton writes I just wanted you to know that your show is truly an inspiration to me and my family. I am really looking forward to the final episode.
3/29/2005 Alyson - Participant of Halifax writes I just have to speak up about the eliptical bashing that is going on here. I use it, love it, have thighs of steel because of it. I get a great workout, my cardiovascular health has improved overall and I feel it has helped me lose weight. I have no desire to bike, cross train at this point in time. I do agree that it is good to vary your choice of cardio, I walk as well (no little wander either, I boot it) but I do not think it is fair to say it is of no benefit at all. I believe Paul stated that only fat people use the eliptical - I would love to see him make this statement in a room full of body builders and runners at my gym who use them daily to supplement their routine. I do lift weights, got to Kickboxing class, eat properly and vary my activity. However, I will always love my eliptical time, the calories it burns and the manotony of it when I am exhausted and am just happy I am moving. 3/29/2005 Lisa of Collingwood ON writes I have to agree with Paul. I bought an elliptical machine a couple years ago and used it religiously 5 days a week for like 30 mins a day. I honestly did not feel or see any change in my body. Plus I found the thing tremendously BORING. I'd much prefer to go outside for a brisk walk. I sold the machine in the buy and sell within 4 months of buying it. 3/29/2005 Paul Plakas of Edmonton writes Reply to Bill posted in Byron's Forum--------
Looking in magazines like Men's Health and Muscular Development for any legitimate fitness information is like looking in an Archie Comicbook for tips on relationships. If you would like an adventure for your brain cells try www.ptonthenet.com , the best source of fitness articles written by the best trainers and researchers on the planet. But I do not want to take you out of your intellectual comfort zone.
The elliptical may improve your cardiac output, but only for doing the elliptical. It has very little cross over affect for any other activity because of its limited movement. Why do people do cardio? Answer, to make everyday activity seem easier. There is a study on the website I posted where a world class cyclist (probably has good cardio) tried to compete in running races. He ended up being very average. Point is, cardiovascular improvement is activity specific. All the elliptical does is make you better on that machine. So if you want to be the best ellipticaller keep doing it. Do not expect any sports related benefit or any functional improvement on the way your body moves.
I have tried the elliptical, many different models in fact. I've even received a sweat from the activity, but so what? Do you think because you are sweating and your heart rate is elevated that you're getting a purposefut workout? I do not think you have had or even know what a good workout feels like.
For anyone else out there who is overweight and wants a healthier body and lifestyle for the rest of their lives, the elliptical is not the answer. How long can you go on doing the same boring uniplanar motion for. Teach your body how to move properly and participate in all the activities your body is designed to perform. Walk as much as you can everyday, play sports, lift weights, eat organic healthy foods, do something that is active and fun. Do not settle for any minimal short term gains the elliptical has to offer. Let those who do not know any better waste their time. Hey Byron lets see how much you are on the elliptical a year from now. I will send you 10 pounds of Alberta Beef ( I know you like it) if you are still using it 3 times per week minimum.
